Help with Tylan, what to mix it with?

Post by dana7123 » 29 Aug 2018, 10:01

How do you get your dog to take it? I put it in her food, mixed with something else, and she won't eat her food! It does smell!
My Belle is a rescue. She was 3 mo when I adopted her and at 7 mo we discovered the EPI. Her TLI results were "0.4". We went to 3 Vets before we found the 4th vet who knew exactly what was wrong. What a relief! He put her on B12 and enzymes right away! I was so glad to find enzymediane! Belle gets 2 1/2 cups of food with 1 tsp of 8x enzymes twice a day. She is now (at 116 lbs) but now has SIDS. Started putting Slippery Elm in her breakfast (she would regurgitate breakfast & orange/yellow in poo) & she is doing great now!

Hi Dana, a lot of folks put the dose of Tylan in a gel cap. You can order them from Amazon or go to the pharmacy or I think even vitamin shops carry them.
My name is Jill and we live on the Hood Canal in Washington State. We currently have 2 Jack russells, TJ is 8 and Sadie is 2.

Mickey and his pancreatitis brought me to Epi4dogs.com site in 2012 to help manage it.
He lived from 6/99 - 8/2014

Mickey, Jack Russell. Chronic Pancreatitis. Dianes enzymes, 1/8t 3x/day with meals.

Hi. I have the gel capsules, but do you put something around it? Or just put it deep into their mouth?

I popped it in cream cheese or Jif peanut butter after his enzymed meal.

Hi Dana,

I pour the proper amount of Tylan into an empty gel cap and then i tuck the gel cap in a blob of cream cheese.

When i first tried giving Tylan to my gal Izzy, i mixed it in her food...OMG... that was a disaster.... she backed away from her dish and refused to eat !!! and i swear she gave me a dirty look...

SO for us., the capsule tucked in cream cheese works like a charm :)
Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........

Yay I got her to take it. We tried plain, natural with nothing in it yogurt and she liked that! So far poo is getting better. Fingers still crossed because it's not quite there yet. Another question.......where do you get Tylan? Do you have to get it from the vet because they charge so much!!

Oh my gosh you are so right! When I put it in her food she would have nothing to do with her food. 2 days later and she is still suspicious of her food and will check it for about 5 min before she will even try it! My mistake!!

Hi Dana. There are some online pharmacies for pets that would require your vet write a prescription and fax it to them. Just google tylan powder for dogs and you get alot of choices. I am glad you finally got your pup to take it

Thank you Jill for the links. I look into it right away.

Jean I didn't know that! So glad you told me not to rub my eyes!!!! Thanks!!!!

So we can't use the yogurt. Poo was a tiny one step back from the day before so the vet said "no yogurt". For now just her food and not treats or anything else until we get her stable. So I'm back to trying to figure out how to get her to take the Tylan. I know I can't put it in her food because she won't eat her food if I do, so I'm thinking I might have to put it in the capsule and just get it to the back of her throat??????? Trying to stay positive for her!

ahh shucks, that's too bad.... she must have an issue with "dairy" :(

SO.... when you put the nasty Tylan powder it in a capsule... after filling and BEFORE you put the capsule in your dogs' mouth.... (and i am not exaggerating here...) wash your hands/fingers with soap and water..... i learned (the hard way) that Tylan powder is air-borne ..... and then, with very clean hands/fingers ... THEN... put the capsule in her mouth.

The only other thing i can think of is after you fill the capsule and wash your hands is maybe jsut gently rub the capsule in something yummy that she can tolerate..... can she handle mashed tuna fish?... maybe jsut rub/roll the capsule in a little dab of tuna so that it can also help mask the smell/taste??

Or..... BBQ sauce??? (this is another thing that helped some dogs tolerate something they didn't like..........)
