smell

Post by MelC » 16 May 2021, 07:56

Hi my dog has been diagnosed with EPI since October last year. Things have generally improved. she has gained most of her weight and only needs to poo in the night occasionally and her poos are reasonably formed. and she is no longer sick.
we feed her on a kibble recommended by the vet along with some cooked sweet potatoes and Kefir. along with 2 lypex capsules a day (she is a sprocker)

my current issue is her rancid smell, it does not come from anywhere particular, just a general odour. I was wondering if any one had any experience of this and advice on how to reduce the small. It can hit you when you walk into the house or if she is walks into a room. Bless her but it is not nice.

thanks in hope
Mel .

Good afternoon from Liverpool, where are you ?

you say its rancid smell , where is is it coming from ?

Lypex doesnt leave any smell normally, we used it for 2 years with Kara, I suppose it might be undigested food somewhere along the line

what exactly is the food ?

you say 2 lypex per day is that 1 for each meal ? if not how do you give them ?

Do you supplement b12 at all ? and is there any tummy rumbles

We used Panzym enzymes, Tylan and Chemeyes b12 capsules

Sadly, on 10th May 2019, we lost her to DM

Hi it is really impossible to locate the smell, it just appears a general aroma. Tummy doesn't rumble much and yes it one capsule in each meal breakfast and dinner.

She is on Chappie which the Vet advised, I have thought about trying something else but worried about upsetting things as she is generally stable.

but the smell is bad

Hi Mel. The researchers believe the smell is from the rotting food in the gut basically and should go away over time with the right balance of enzymes, B12 and food. Is the food you're feeding within our guidlines of 4% fiber or less and limits peas and legumes?
Madelon, owned by DOC. DOC dx EPI 5/2015 = TLI < .4, B12 406; Folate >24. Good afternoon Mel. Good to hear you and the good report on Meg.
Here is a study done on the "smell" from their dog on enzymes:

https://epi4dogs.com/epi-odor-study/

Also Mickey was giving off a metallic smell from his mouth at one point and he had some internal issues going on.

This link tells about some possible reasons you dog might smell.

The odor that some dogs develop is very selective. Some dogs have a terrible odor and some, like our Kolby, have no odor. It does seem to lessen as they progress in treatment and get the food, enzymes, B12 and antibiotics in balance.

the only thing that maybe comes to mind is that Chappie wet food smells fishy, and its possible that there isnt enough fibre in it , this will possibly create anal gland problems which smell horrible, and if she is sitting on say a carpet then the smell will linger in the carpet and its surroundings

Thank you again for your responses. I thought Chappie was good as it was low fibre, but can it then be too low in fibre.

The Chappie kibble I just looked at says 3% fiber which is fine if that is what you are feeding.
If you are worried about too low fiber you could add a little canned plain pumpkin with the food.(but I see you feed some sweet potato too)
Have you thought of having the vet clean the anal glands?
