Good news! We started the Slippery Elm Saturday night and his poops have been regular since. Never needed any Tylosin. Not sure if he really had a SID flare and the SE did the trick or if he just had normal diarrhea that would have gotten better on its own and I jumped the gun with the SE. Either way, we’re in good shape!

One last question. Assuming this was a SID flare and the SE helped, how long do we give it to him? Forever? A fixed amount of time?

Thanks all!

Good news!
Are you giving it twice a day?
If so go down to once a day for a few days. If all is good I would say stop.
Indon't normally wean mine off SE but just stop when symptoms subside.
Hard to know if it was SID or just upset tummy.

AWESOME !!!!!!!!!! So glad you got the SE and either it stopped the loose stools ... or.... the loose stools were going to stop on their own.

I agree with Jill... Since SE is usually fast acting..... i would try reducing it to once a day and watch the stools closely, if they get soft, then go back to twice a day and continue at 2x's daily for while.... maybe a month or two.... and then try reducing again.... see what happens....

Some people only use slippery elm "as needed"
while others keep their dogs on a maintenance dose forever cause when they try to stop the stools get sloppy.

SO.... it will be a trial and error thing and Boson's body(elimination process ) will let you know which way you should go with the SE.

I give him 1/2tsp twice a day. That was the dose recommended for his weight (73lbs).

We’ll go down to once a day for a few days and then stop if all is good. Thanks everyone!
