I took Phoenix to a new vet today to get blood work done and an ultrasound. They have to knock him out to do this so they used Isoflourine gas which he had had before. Phoenix had developed a bad cough from the powdered pancreas as well that they were going to check out.
Everything seemed to go well until I got home. Then, Phoenix developed very loud respiration and a fast heartbeat. It sounded like a very loud asthma. I called the vet on call and he told me it sounded like lung irritation from the anesthesia. The noise from his lungs is so loud you can hear him in the dining room from the living room.
They said to give him one half of a prednisone which I did. It has been going on since 7pm and it is now 1:30 in the morning. They said if it is no better in the morning to call them. Also he gave Phoenix chewable Clavamox tablets to take. These things are huge and I am having to cut them into 6 pieces to get them down him. What was this vet thinking?
My poor baby sounds terrible and I am so scared. He has been through a lot these last three weeks and now he is worse.
Our life is a nightmare
Re: Our life is a nightmare
I am so sorry Phoenix is not doing well. Have you tried smashing the Clavamox between 2 pieces of wax paper? Then you can squirt squeeze cheese around and over it hopefully like mine he will lick it up. Do it after an enzyme meal.
Or crush it up and put in a syringe along with chicken broth and squirt down throat.
Sorry I haven't dealt with breathing issue.

Re: Our life is a nightmare
I'm so sorry to hear that Phoenix is having such a hard time. First, I wanted to know how he is doing now. Second, I would like to know how you are preparing his meals with the enzymes. The enzymes can be irritating, which is why we recommend letting the food and enzymes sit after mixing. If there is loose powdered enzyme that hasn't been mixed with water and food thoroughly, it could potentially be inhaled and cause problems in his lungs. Please let us know how you are preparing his food and how he is now.

Re: Our life is a nightmare
thanks Shirley for mentioning that. If i remember correctly Susan feeds Phoenix raw food (correct?) and he won't eat the food if it is pureed... so Susan, do try to somehow mix the enzymes in something wet, even yogurt.. or... i think you were going to try and put the enzymes in capsules.... if you did this PLEASED let us know how things are going.
So sorry that Phoenix is having such a difficult time right now.
I sure hope things improve soon!
