Costco dog food
Costco dog food
Hello! If you’re a Costco member and haven’t tried their food for your EPI dog, this is for you! Everything I’ve read says the crude fiber content is most important for maintaining a healthy diet for your dog. We switched to the Kirkland Signature mature dog- chicken, rice and egg formula- after finding out grain-free food is potentially linked to heart disease in dogs. It has a crude fiber content of 3% (less than the 4% max). Some of the recommended dog food for EPI dogs is insanely expensive so finding this Costco food was amazing! Our dogs, one with EPI and one without, both love the food! Just wanted to share for those on the hunt for new food.

Re: Costco dog food
Hey That is great if that food works for your dog. I fed that food before , and it worked well for both of my Germans until.....Kohle was diagnosed, and I went thru a battle trying to find a food that he could have, unfortunately for us that food doesn't work since his diagnosis, and he has to have grain free, white potato and legume free in order to do well...so , he is on the Sport Dog Elite Whitefish- pricey, yes but worth it, and the food is pretty "heavy" so you are not feeding as much per meal. Hopefully you will continue to get good results with that food.
Have a good day!

Welcome Hh2019 and your pup. Glad to hear the Kirkland food is working for your dog. As far as the grain free and DCM connection here is some good information:

A lot of manufacturers are replacing meat proteins with Peas and legumes.

Re: Costco dog food
Thanks for sharing..... and yes, some of our EPI dogs can and do eat dog food with rice in it.... but on the flip side, many of our EPI dogs cannot tolerate dog food with rice in it. This is why we first suggest trying a food with NO grain in it and then once the dog is stable, if the pet owner wants to "try" a food with some grain in it, and if it seems tolerable, rice is usually the most likely tolerable grain.... then go for it. Trying to find the right diet for an EPI dog can be the trickiest part of trying to manage EPI.
Just because a food is grain free does not mean the dog could or will get DCM.... they are now discovering that there are a lot more factors involved. Things like poor quality protein, greatly reduced meat protein that plays a bigger factor. Etc,. Best thing we can do is use EPI protocol initially as a guidelines and then just try things one at a time.
But even with all that being said... thank you for letting us know that the Costco brand of food worked for your dog. That helps us know what products have worked with some EPI dogs that can tolerate rice.

It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........

Re: Costco dog food
During the 9 years I had an EPI dog, we learned rice was a no, no, as was chicken, and, white fish, chicken seems to be the most intollerated food by a fair amount of dogs
This is an interesting article
https://aussiepooch.com.au/blogs/news/w ... a-sick-dog
by no means an EPI4DOGS interpretation, however.......my vet said the same
the way I look at EPI is EVERY animal is different
if it fits, wear it......................... i.e. we are all different
Costco is a brilliant store, I love it for fresh meat
let us know

Thank you Jean for posting that article - I read a similar one but couldn't find it. I tried Doc on a food with rice (Royal Canin Gastrointestinal) but he cannot tolerate rice AT ALL.
We do recommend grain free when diagnosed, however, some EPI dogs are able to tolerate some grains so if it works for you keep on keeping on.
As for EPI being expensive, there are other ways to save money like getting your enzymes from EnzymeDiane and B12 pills from WonderLabs (Pet Factor B12 pills).
