I have had both an EPI cat and an EPI dog, and after finding the balance of the four corner stones Madelon talked about Kara was just like any other dog, we started being protective of her but that didnt last !

Hi! Yes that's a bit too much B12 - just back it down now. As for the food - you don't need prescription food unless there's another underlying condition. I think the food is definitely the culprit here. I would definitely go back to the taste of the wild - a lot of EPI dogs have done well on that food - just double check the label to make sure it falls within the fiber recommendations. Switch the food slowly over at least 7 days. I would give the food switch a try before the Tylan.

We had the most difficulty finding the right food, but once we did, the poos improved greatly. So I agree with Madelon, that maybe this is the best place to start. If you are keeping a journal/log, record everything you give her on a daily basis, the amounts and the resulting poos.

Hey guys,

Harper has been doing better since her diagnosis a little over a month ago, poop hasn’t been perfect but better and she’s gained a few pounds. We were finally able to get some Tylosin and started her on it last Thursday (just 6 days ago) at first her stools improved but over the last couple of days she’s had diarrhea; nothing else has changed. Has anyone else had this issue?

I googled "Can Tylan cause diarrhea?" and got this. It's an answer to the question "Is Tylan used to cure diarrhea?"

"Tylan may also decrease the symptoms by affecting the immune system in the intestine. Side effects that usually are not serious include: Loose stools, mild diarrhea, and stomach upset."

I hadn't heard this, but I think maybe you should cut back on the dose, or maybe someone else will suggest giving it more time. What a mixed message, though.

She weighs 39 pounds and I’ve been giving her 1/8 of a tsp 2x a day.

That's the right dose. How has it been today? I just looked at the bag, and the fiber content is low, so that's good. Are your giving slippery elm, too?

Just know that you WILL get there, it just takes tweaking sometimes. Check back, more help will be on the way. Take care. The weight gain is a good sign!---Pam

Hi Alexis. Have you changed the food or are you still feeding the Hills chicken and rice? If so, it may be time to switch the food. Most EPI dogs can't handle rice and/or chicken. I doubt the Tylan is causing the diarrhea, although it's possible, my first suspicion is the food - especially since you were still dealing with SID, which is why you started the Tylan. You might try and look for a grain free food with 4% fiber or less and avoid/limit peas and legumes. You might have a look at Sport Dog Food Elite - several of us are using their food with good results.

I’m sorry I didn’t respond to your dose of Tylosin information. My computer crashed and then I had a tooth extraction(when it rains it pours). Pam answered your question about the tylosin (thank you Pam) and I agree with Jill about the food being the possible culprit for the diarrhea.
