My dog limp after dinner

Post by alex » 26 Jun 2021, 22:48

Hi!
I have a new question.😂
My dog limps after every meal. I thought it was a joint problem. I use a variety of joint products, chondroitin, glucosamine, green-lipped mussels, fish oil (ds/da,sashas blend,4cyte,antinol,whc fish oil)), which have no effect at all. What puzzles me most is that he only limps after a meal. If he doesn't eat food, his walking is normal. After each meal, he walks with a limp, accompanied by shortness of breath and a low tail, but as soon as he sits down or lies down, his breathing immediately becomes normal. Is there something wrong with her stomach? Has anyone ever encountered a similar problem? I need some help (the veterinarian couldn't find out why). Thank you!

I would have your dog checked for pancreatitis. The shortness of breath and low tail can signal pain.

Mickey and his pancreatitis brought me to Epi4dogs.com site in 2012 to help manage it.

I replenish her with lypex, every day. His stool looks good, too. Thank you for your advice. I should retest his pancreas.

In keeping with my usual responses, I will go outside the box. Is there anything about his posture while he eats, that could be causing him to cramp? Or does he eats too quickly? I think I might try placing his bowl a little higher, or putting his food in a maze feeder.

Just a thought! --- Pam
Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

it sounds like pain and sounds lilke pain from eating... and then that begs the question WHY would eating cause pain.

My first suggestion is to have the vet check her over.... it is possible, like others have suggested, pancreatitis....or, it could be bloat- -which could be very dangerous and you really want a vet to diagnose this .... but then you will also need to figure out what is triggering this. Or it could be so many other gastrointestinal conditions. Or it could be an ingredient in the food or a particular supplement/ additive that you are giving her, trying to help but for some reason it is NOT agreeing with her and causing pain.

Sorry we don't have a definite answer except for recommendation that something like this should really be seen by a vet.

For example, years ago, my older dog would cramp up after eating... and at first i was convinced he had pancreatits (he did that play bow position with his stomach), but he didn't have it. Then my vet was convinced he had EPI, we tested him, he didn't have that either.... it turned out he had A-Typical Cushings.. once we got the right diagnosis... and got him on the right medicine, within 1 week he was dramatically better. Sometimes it's a long journey to find out what the problem really is.......................

Please keep us posted
Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........

I agree with the advice to get her to your vet to be checked out for all the suggested reasons. Our Kolby developed Bloat very suddenly and we only had a limited time to get him to surgery to correct the twisting of his stomach. However, some dogs have gradual gas build up with bloat which has to be removed.

If it is not bloat, but one of the other suggested conditions, or a new one, she should still be seen to see what is causing her discomfort after eating.

Let us know.

Sending prayers - I've not heard of anything like this but I too would recommend a vet visit. Please let us know.
Madelon, owned by DOC. DOC dx EPI 5/2015 = TLI < .4, B12 406; Folate >24. DOC taught me so much and together we battled and overcame EPI, food sensitivies, environmental allergies but we lost the cancer battle. DOC was dx with hemangiosarcoma 5/2022 and crossed the rainbow bridge July 24, 2022. He is and always will be the love of my life, my soulmate, my heart dog.
