Well thank you for everyone for crossing hands and paws for Oliver. Did a very slow withdrawal of the Tylosin (3 week slow wean).

Within one week of completing the tylosin, here came the yellow mustard watery stools and vomiting.

Saw the vet three days later and Oliver has lost 4 pounds . He is down to 78 pounds.

Between the time of the watery stools (yes he woke me up at three in the morning blesshis little heart), I started him back on Tylosin 3/4 teaspoon daily.

No food changes have occurred. He does not do well on any probiotics.

Since starting him back on low does Tylan I have firm stools, vomiting has stopped, and he is now eating 3 cups of food twice a day which is up from 2 cups of food twice a day. He has stopped eating my baseboards, (a huge indicator when he when his SID is acting up.

Question: when I went to the vet, he said everything sounds good but he would not give me a definitive dosage for Maintenance Tylan. He agrees to it and said that I’m just gonna have to figure it out myself. Trial and error do to speak.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how much Tylan Oliver will have to be on for life? Since restarting Tylan maintenance, Oliver’s energy levels have gone up, he’s back to his rambunctious self, shiny coat, not snacking on baseboards, and his big old sparkle is in his eyes… all mischievousness as a German shepherd can be.

Kaelen, glad to hear you have Oliver back on track. Click on this link and scroll down to the Tylan dosing chart. Way over to the rigjt are maintenance doses. Just find the weight.
Yes you may have to adjust up or down a skosh, every dog is different.

Hi Kaelen,

Sorry to hear that Oliver may need to be a Tylan -lifer..... but that's okay... this happens to some dogs and like your vet alluded to.... you will have to figure out what the lowest dose of tylan is that will maintain Oliver.
The good news is that this is something that we help lots of folks figure out.

SO..... i have not gone back and re-read all of the previous posts about Oliver and the Tylan situation, but it sounds like this is the second time you put Oliver on TYlan and he does well and then once you stop or withdraw.... the poos go south. If this is where you are at.... then the following is a recommendation on finding what dose will work best for Oliver.

First go to the antibiotic page Jill posted about .

Start with the right amount of TYlan based on Oliver's weight and give the Tylan twice a day.
DO this for a couple of weeks.

At the end of week 2, cut the Tylan dose in half for breakfast and dinner and watch the poos for a few days (maybe 3 to 5 days)
(1) If the poos look a little sloppier.... then go back and just reduce the Tylan dose to 2/3 of the recommended dose for his weight for breakfast and dinner.... and do this for 3 to 5 days and see if this works......
(2) If the poos look good...... then "try" giving Oliver 1/2 dose of Tylan once a day and again, watch the poos for a few days and try to assess if this works or not.
Hopefully one of the above options will work out to be a good maintenance dose for Oliver.... if not we will continue to work with you.

A suitable maintenance dose can be as low as 5mg/kg..... but it all depends on the individual dog what their magic maintenance dose ends up being. SO, we will do our best to help you figure it out!

Thank you for the replies. Oliver if anything is teaching me patience. I’m so happy that I’m not the only one going through this. Just knowing that gives me a lot of hope.

I’m still playing with the dosage. Did 3/4 teaspoon a day for about a week which worked for a few days. His stools are harder until the end which is soft and mushy.

Since the mushy unformed stool after the formed stool (same episode of poo), I’m going to try to go up a pinch today to get the stools fully formed. Olesia, thank you for the ideas of ways to administer and wean. That’s so incredibly helpful.

He’s still energetic, has stopped eating the baseboards (ugh ), and wants to be part of the family instead of hiding in the bathroom.

Thank you for all the support. I don’t know what I’d do with out all of you.

Oh… never did I ever think I’d be running out to the yard, I’m my robe, to look at poo. I can only imagine what my neighbors must think. Oh, don’t forget the “touchdown” signal I make when he poos are normal and yell “yes!! Awesome poop!! We got this. Good boy!”

Just an insight on my daily poop patrol life. Hehehe
