Newly diagnosed Shiloh shepherd

Post by ahaslauer » 18 Jul 2022, 21:11

Hello.

I have a newly diagnosed Shiloh shepherd 4 year old girl. She was just diagnosed Friday. She eats 5 cups of kibble a day. The vet has her on 4tsp of enzymes per meal (2-3 meals a day). I just recently started adding water because I was never instructed to do so. From what I have read I am worried this may be too much. This diagnosis has sent me through a loop and I feel like I’m trying to play catch up. Any advice would be wonderful.

Hi Amber,
Eva is gorgeous.
The correct dose of enzyme is 1 level teaspoon per 1 level cup kibble. Add a little room temperature water and stir. Let set 20 minutes, stir and serve. All food given needs to be treated with enzyme.
Will you post the Tli, B12 and folate test results?
Does your vet have Eva on B12? What diet is Eva on?

Eva is on her normal purina for now. I do not have her test results. They did give her a B12 shot while she was in the vet hospital. Is there any reason they would have her on 4tsp per feeding? She only eats 2 cups per feeding.

You want to use 2 level teaspoons per 2 level cups kibble.

Most Epi dogs do better on a grain free (pea, lentil, legume free or low content) dog food of 4%fiber or less.

The B12 shots should 1 time a week for 6 weeks then as needed. You can also use oral B12.

Hi Amber, and welcome!

Two kinds of kibble I have fed, as have others, are Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream, and Sport Dog Elite Herding Dogs formula, buffalo & sweet potato. Tucker doesn't like Pacific Stream, so I feed the other one. You can usually get them on amazon, chewy, or direct from the companies. Be sure and feed her 150% of the amount you'd feed her at her IDEAL weight, broken up into three or four meals.

Once you've gotten a positive blood test, you will want to start looking out for SID, which all EPI dogs have. https://epi4dogs.com/sidsibo-in-brief/ Don't be alarmed. All of this will soon be second nature to you.

Eva is so beautiful My friend has two Shilohs, wonderful dogs.

You will find an amazing amount of help, information, and love in this group. So, keep on posting, and ask all the questions you might come up with. We've all been in your shoes. Our journey started about 3 1/2 years ago, and we're doing great.

---Pam & Tucker

OH! And once you're sure it's EPI, there are ways to save money on the treatment/maintenance.
Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

Hi Amber. A warm welcome to you and Eva. She is beautiful.

Sometimes vets have not had a lot of experience with EPI and are not familiar with the dosage. My vet had only had one case of EPI in 30 years when we took Kolby to him. He prescribed twice as many enzymes that were needed, thinking less is more, and of course, Kolby got diarrhea. Luckily, I found this site and copied all the protocols and took them to him. He read everything I gave him and learned right along with us. So if your vet is willing to learn, then everyone will benefit.

The beginning stage is the hardest while you are trying to get everything in balance and while you are worrying about your girl. Try not to get discouraged. It will get better. One thing that really helped us was keeping a log/journal. Record everything you give Eva each day, the amounts, and the resulting poos. You will be able to see what works and what needs to be adjusted. Seeing it in writing helps you to see patterns that you might have missed otherwise. You can use one of our log forms or keep a notebook. It saved our sanity.

Kolby was with us for 11 years and thanks to Olesia and all the wonderful people here, he thrived. We are so fortunate to have had him.

Hang in there.

Good morning from the UK

Sorry I am late to this party but the UK has been having ridiculous hot weather and yesterday was totally ridiculous so I didnt do anything and my leg is a plaster cast so...................

Anyway

Have you considered Enzyme Diane enzymes

https://enzymediane.com/

I haave no idea why the vets would say this, but a lot of them have no experience with EPI try to get the test results from them

B12 is essential to an EPI dog

https://wagwalking.com/condition/failur ... itamin-b12

but please read the page here on b12 under the page managing EPI

some people supplement B12 from Wonderlabs

https://www.wonderlabs.com/itemleft.php?itemnum=K9688

infact I would actually say most do

people also use Tylan as an antibiotic, if there is any bad bugs in the gut thew will feed on the B12 that the animal might have , and the Tylan will destroy them

My Kara was a survivor fo 8 years of EPI , and its totally mnageable
My name is Jean we live in Liverpool in Uk

I am the Forum Director which I am very proud of

My Kara born 21 July 2009 diagnosed with EPI by cTLI test August 2010 TLI = <1...folate 14 Cobalamin 408, shot down to 94, b12 injections every other day

Lowest weight 39 pounds

We used Panzym enzymes, Tylan and Chemeyes b12 capsules

Sadly, on 10th May 2019, we lost her to DM
