New grayish poop

Post by wsparks2 » 13 Sep 2022, 16:15

My dog was diagnosed with epi a year ago. Poops have always been good and solid . She eats proplan sensitive skin and stomach per our vet and internal med doctors. Takes wonderland B12. A few weeks ago I started giving her 2 b12 pills a day instead of 1. The directions on the bottle say give 2 for her weight but I had always given 1. She weights 110lbs. Also a week ago she got into a little bucket of grease on an outside smoker. There wasn’t very much grease in the bucket but she did have diarrhea for 1 day. . But for the past 2 weeks her poop is a grayish color - still normal in texture and not greasy looking. She takes enzymes by Diane and the current package made her poops smaller . Any suggestions on what I should look for or do ? Vets absolutely do not want her on grain free food as her breed is prone to DCM.

Hi Wendy. You might want to share this with your vet: https://epi4dogs.com/taurine-grainfree-diets/

However, if you've been having success, she is probably one of the EPI dogs who can handle grains.

And this page has a note on gray poop https://epi4dogs.com/all-about-poop/

it doesn't seem like the extra B12 would have made a difference, since they just pee out any excess, but if it were me I might go back to just one capsule since the timing seems to coincide. Hope this helps---Pam
Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

hi Wendy,
the first thing that comes to mind with grey colored poo is a possible liver issue ..... BUT....based on the fact that she got into some smokey grease a week ago .. ..my first thought is more along the lines of something to due with the bile process or bile obstruction. If it was me, i'd call the vet and have it checked out.

In the meantime.....with regards to the Pet Factor capsule of B12.... i'd stick with just 1 capsule a day, not 2.
Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........

Yes grey poop is usually indicative of maldigestion, bile or pancreas issue.
Might check liver function also.
