How to Stop the Vurping

Post by secretlybees » 19 May 2023, 11:27

My EPI pup, Katara, has been stable for the last few years but this month we're had a big spike in vurping and now vomiting too.

Ive made no changes to enzyme or slipper elm amounts, her poops are still good, qnd she's not any more ravenous than her usual food motivated doggy self.

I can only think of 2 changes that have happened lately. The slippery elm brand I buy changed their packaging (could include a change in formula as well but it's not listed) and I've refilled my container of enzymes from my supply of Diane's 6x in the cupboard.

Any ideas on what happened and how to stop the vomiting? It isn't fun to watch and I imagine even less fun to experience

It sounds like SID/SIBO creeping back in. Do you use a Probiotic also?

if you meant you "refilled" your supply of Diane's 6x.... do you mean a brand new batch? if so... check the LIPASE USP units... and if it is 10,000 to 20,000 less than 70,000 USP units....you might need to add a pinch more of enzymes..... BUT the opposite often happens..... check to see if the LIPASE USP units are higher than 70,000... then reduce the amount of enzymes by a tiny bit.

If you meant you replenished the cupboard enzymes with existing enzymes you have in the frig/freezer.... it is possible the enzymes got wet/frost, etc and that would do it.

Or... it could be that the SLippery Elm product changed the supplier and the potency isn't the same.

The first thing i would do if it is none of the above, is contact the vet and ask/tell them you are going to start Katara on Omeprazole (Prilosec) and if (1) they are okay with this (2) and exactly how much and how often should you give it.

All EPI dogs have an issue with their bile acid functionality.... some display problems and with others, you don't know anything might be wrong. Omeprazole usually helps... a lot!

OR...................this also could be an indication that SID is getting out of control.... in which case, my 1st step (if the above doesn't work) is to try increasing the enzymes and see if that makes a difference...if not.... next solution is to try probiotics.... give it a few weeks, if no improvement....then ask your vet for Tylan antibiotic powder..........

One thing you might want to check is call the dog food company and ask if they have recently changed the formula....sometimes this happens and they don't have to disclose it for months..............

By refilled the enzymes, I meant I have a smaller airtight container which I keep out for daily use and a kilo stored cold and dry which I refill from. Ensures I'm never in a panic about running out of enzymes.

I don't use a probiotic normally since the vurping usually isn't an issue. Thats a good idea. I'll go pick some up this evening for kataras dinner.

Hopefully that works, otherwise I'll look into Tylan and Omeprazole with the vet. Thanks for the help both of you :)

Thanks for clearing that up!

We try to suggest probiotics... just in case they work and we don't have to resort to antibiotics.... but if you don't see ANY improvement within a few weeks... talk to your vet about Tylan

HOWEVER... before starting the probiotics.... i would start Omeprazole first... just call your vet, clear it with him/her, and make sure they tell you how much to use.... this very likely might fix the whole problem.... or not... and then go down the list.

And in the meantime. call the dog food company.. just in case they did change the formula.
