EPI and Kidney issues?
New EPI Dog Mom Question: Is there a connection between EPI and Kidney issues? My girl is only 3 almost 4 years old and is having problems with wetting herself while sleeping even after she goes outside. She is a spayed female dog so we just started her on Incurin but I worry if I should be extra diligent about kidney issues because of her recent diagnosis of EPI.
Re: EPI and Kidney issues?
Has Eleanor had a urinalysis and kidney check recently? I see you joined in February. Is that when she was diagnosed? Sometimes when they are using enzymes they drink more and have to pee more.
I had a female with spay incontinence who was put on low dose Proin for 10 years and did great. Towards her old age had to switch to Incurin as Proin interfered with a Senior medication.
Will you please tell us more about Eleanor? Tli test results, what enzymes you are using, food, meds etc..
Look forward to hearing from you.

Re: EPI and Kidney issues?
Yes February is when she was diagnosed with EPI. She had a urine test done a couple of days ago to make sure she didn't have an infection and the vet didn't seem concerned by anything that came back. Eleanor is an English Springer Spaniel and will be 4 in July. She currently is using Covetrus Pancreatic Enzyme Concentrate Powder with her Ultamino prescription food and a B12 shot monthly.jilbert57 wrote: ↑22 May 2023, 16:53 Has Eleanor had a urinalysis and kidney check recently? Re: EPI and Kidney issues?
Elizabeth, feel free to post pictures of Eleanor. We love to see what the pups look like!
I do not believe that Epi and kidney issues go hand in hand. Most pups diagnosed with Epi go on to live a long and productive life and pass of something other than Epi.
It sounds like you and your vet have it well managed.
It was strange. Kiya got spayed then a couple years later started dribbling, then left a puddle when she got up! Ruled out infection and vet chalked it up to spay incontinence. Why it is delayed after spaying I have no idea.
I hope the longer Eleanor is on enzymes maybe her body will get used to it and the issue will stop.

Re: EPI and Kidney issues?
Hi Elizabeth,
WOW!!! Eleanor is gorgeous! Beautiful Spaniel!
Before my EPI gal, Izzy was diagnosed with EPI, she was dubbed juvenile incontinent (around 6 months old). i have ALWAYS wondered if it was connected to EPI in her particular case..... anyway.....fast forward to 1+1/2 yr old and she was confirmed with EPI.
Izzy lived to 15 years old and was on PROIN for incontinence for 14+1/2 years..... just sharing this in case this turns out to be an incontinence issue with Eleanor...... HOWEVER.... that being said.... many, MANY dogs when first diagnosed with EPI and started on the enzymes.... they appear to "leak" a LOT. Often for weeks or a month or two...at the most... so this very well could be the enzymes.
BUT... we always still tell the EPI parents to watch it and if it doesn't clear up in a reasonable amount of time, have the vet check for a UTI or diabetes.
REgarding a connection between Kidney issues and EPI...i have talked to the researchers about this and they always say that there is not any connection.... however....we have seen a handful of EPI dogs here on the forum that have developed kidney issues... but usually just temporary... unless it is part of the end of life scenario. SOOOOooooooo i honestly don't know if i believe the researchers OR if we have seen a handful simply because we have been around for so long so we have seen thousands of EPI dogs and their symptoms posted about here on the forum ......so that is why we have seen some..........

Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........

Re: EPI and Kidney issues?
How absolutely gorgeous, my girl had everything know to man, and lived a producted life, and what a lovely name, is it from somewhere ?
My middle Shepherd had an issue on holiday as he couldnt stop peeing and it was an infection from the sea water
I see you are using
https://www.medi-vet.com/Covetrus-Pancreatic-Enzyme-Concentrate-Powder-p/11252.htm
have you considered using Enzyme Diane
https://enzymediane.com/
this seems expensive
can I ask what you are using Incurin for I have read up about it but dont know
when was she spayed ?, it could be spay incontinence
