Progress slowing - Thoughts?

Post by Bowers » 23 Aug 2023, 17:19

Hello all,

My Gryph has had a few not so great days. We had made so much progress since being diagnosed in May. Based on the advice from this amazing group, I do understand so much more than I thought possible. But, I need your expertise still!

We have him on Pro Plan Chicken & Rice.

I have taken him down to 1 tsp. of enzyme with each feeding.

He takes 300 MG of Tylosin with each meal.

Poops have been great and weight is up! Suddenly, the last 4 poops have not been great and 2 of the 4 had mucous. Nothing has changed except the poo!

When this happens, should I up the antibiotic and/or the enzyme or only one at a time or let it ride a bit and see if things settle? Poop is life for me, lol!

Thank you in advance!

Since he gained weight have you upped the amount of Tylan to match his weight?

Do you give 1 teaspoon enzyme per 1cup kibble?

If all else fails I would look at the rice in the food. The grains cut down the efficacy of the enzymes. Congrats on the weight gain!

Mickey and his pancreatitis brought me to Epi4dogs.com site in 2012 to help manage it.
He lived from 6/99 - 8/2014

Mickey, Jack Russell. Chronic Pancreatitis. Dianes enzymes, 1/8t 3x/day with meals.

Michele---This page has the correct dosage of tylan according to your dog's weight. https://epi4dogs.com/antibiotics/ Somehow the link isn't showing up. Go to Managing EPI/SID-SIBO/SID Antibiotics I don't know how to convert mg to teaspoons.

Some EPI dogs don't do well on poultry, and even though it's what he's been eating, things can still change for no apparent reason. I agree with Jill about the rice. I don't know if you have other issues that require the food you are feeding Gryphon(my grandson has the same name), but Sport Dog Elite, herding dog formula, and Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream are two popular kibbles that have the correct ingredients & appropriate amount of fiber.

Do you give B12? Wonderlabs Pet Factor is used by many members. Tucker's B12 level was acceptable, but I give it to him anyway, because it is typically a part of the solution, and if they don't need it they just pee it out.

Just remember to only make one change at a time, and to write down what you do. Hang in there---Pam & Tucker
Tucker was a shepherd mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Diane's Enzymes 4 t/day, B12 1 capsule/day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/day. Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 4 c/day. 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma Nov. 2023. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

Now there's Nina. 5 year old GSD. TLI 1.0 B12 323. We are still tweaking her routine, and getting lots of help from the forum. She is klutzy and goofy, and we love her dearly, too.

Looking back at some of your older posts. It says Gryph is about 70 pounds. If that is still true, he should be at 750mg (1/4th teaspoon) twice a day. Unless, this is long term usage then it should be 150mg. Tylosin is very safe for dogs. The toxicity levels are insanely high. 100mg/kg were tolerated by dogs and rats in one study. That is 4 times higher than the recommended dose.
