Bailey - 3y Golden Retriever - Symptoms persist

Post by rhodeco@hotmail.com » 31 Oct 2023, 15:15

Hi everyone,

Our Golden Retriever, Bailey, was diagnosed with EPI in August this year. After four months of symptoms and three months of treatment with enzymes we are now waiting on a referral for a scope as the thought is she has a secondary issue like IBD.

She weighs 45.4lbs as of last week and currently takes 2 1/2 scoops of CanAddase enzymes with each meal.

She had been raw fed since a puppy but her diarrhea and weight loss have persisted so she was transitioned to a novel protein and now as of last week she was placed on hydrolyzed protein (Royal Canin). We are months away still from getting her in for a scope and we are at a loss in terms of assessing whether all of this is still EPI related or, in fact, a secondary condition.

Can anyone comment on their dogs who didn't respond to treatment and/or anyone using CanAddase? She has had multiple rounds of Tylan, hopefully it isn't SIBO given how recently she finished her last round (within the past month).

Understandably she'll be sensitive to diet changes. We were encouraged to act quickly given how much weight she was loosing. We just completed 4 weeks of B12 injections and weekly weigh ins.

Could this be the EPI still not managed yet? She still always seems starving despite feeding her specific needs at this time. She's also developed greasy fur around her anus despite steatorrhea persisting this entire time.

We are at a loss of what to think and/or what to do next.

Thank you!

Hi did Bailey get tested for Epi using the Tli test? And if so what was the test result?
The enzymes you are using are not strong enough they have to be porcine or bovine in nature and contain Protease, lipase and Amylase

The brand you name contains protease and the plant enzyme cellulase.

I see you are in Canada.

I would suggest you order enzymes from enzymediane.com and get the 6x.

Epi needs a combination of the correct enzymes, grainfree food 4% fiber or less, antibiotic for SID/SIBO and a B12 supplement.

Mickey and his pancreatitis brought me to Epi4dogs.com site in 2012 to help manage it.
He lived from 6/99 - 8/2014

Mickey, Jack Russell. Chronic Pancreatitis. Dianes enzymes, 1/8t 3x/day with meals.

I am going to try to help you the best as I can.
I have scoured the Internet for Can-addase and I cannot find any nutritional information. There is a chance that it is either not strong enough, or your pup doesn't agree with it. I am assuming you live in Canada based of that product. I would recommend trying a different brand. Enzyme Diane does ship to Canada. I would recommend starting there. In the mean time you can try increasing the amount of Can-addase given at each meal. Try 3 teaspoons and if no improvement you can keep going higher. You could also try Amazon and see if you can get something faster.
Enzyme powder with approx Std 71,400 USP units of Lipase, 388,000 USP units Protease, 460,000 USP units Amylase. You will want to look for something with comparable amounts to this.
It could also be an absorption problem. The B12 shots should have helped with this though
The greasy anus makes me believe that the fat from the food isn't getting broken down and absorbed correctly.
It could be SIDs (SIBo) when tylan powder was given, how long was it given for? Typical dosage is twice a day for 45 days.
I would start by trying to change the enzymes. Some dogs do not agree with certain enzymes.

Hi, I'm sorry you and Bailey are having trouble getting stabilized. It can be so frustrating, but after some tweaking you'll get her settled.

Please post all the test results from your vet, so that a staff member can analyze them. And be sure & tell us whether she was fasted for twelve hours prior to her blood draw.

Order those enzymes from Diane. 6X gives an easier administration, because the ratio is I teaspoon/1 cup kibble. Add room temperature liquid--water or broth, and let sit for 20 minutes. If she balks at the taste, top her meal with something yummy & smelly, to get that food & those enzymes into her.

I don't know what foods are available to you in Canada, but Tucker has done well on Taste of the Wild, High Sierra or Pacific Stream formula, available on Amazon. It would probably be easiest to feed a kibble right now, and maybe transition back to raw later on. Feed her 150% of what she should eat, if she were at her ideal weight, broken up into three meals if you can.

Hang in there---Pam & Tucker
Tucker was a shepherd mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Diane's Enzymes 4 t/day, B12 1 capsule/day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/day. Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 4 c/day. 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma Nov. 2023. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

Now there's Nina. 5 year old GSD. TLI 1.0 B12 323. We are still tweaking her routine, and getting lots of help from the forum. She is klutzy and goofy, and we love her dearly, too.
