Do I need to make dosage adjustments?

Post by Dan_L » 18 Feb 2024, 15:52

My vet originally started my EPI dog Jaxson out on Panzquin and the enzyme values on the Panzquin container are:

Panzquin
Lipase - 71,400
Protease - 388,000
Amylase - 460,000

I’m now using Enzyme-Diane and the current batch shows the enzyme levels as:

Enzyme-Diane
Lipase - 91,560
Protease - 504,000
Amylase - 610,400

Do I need to make dosage adjustments so that I am giving the same amount of enzymes as Panzquin per meal or am I being overly analytical?

Do you see on Enzyme Diane if it says 6x or 8x pancreatin?

Jill

Each company seems to use different metrics. Some companies put down how much enzymes are present at expiration, some put down the lowest amount there might be based on the ingredients. Enzyme Diane tests every batch and put the results on the bag.
That being said, you could experiment and cut back on the enzymes and see if it works. There isn't a definite amount needed, as each dog requires a different amount, based on their needs and the dog food. With 6x from enzyme Diane, the standard dose is 1 tsp per cup of kibble and 3/4th teaspoon per cup of wet food. That is why Jilbert asked. I use 8x to give Eddie a lower amount to make sure he eats all of it.

Thank you for that explanation. So much to learn.

It is possible that the higher enzyme levels in Enzyme-Diane may require a dosage adjustment to ensure that your dog is receiving the appropriate amount of enzymes per meal. Run 3

some dogs do fine with the higher dose, others do not and you have to adjust.

SOoooo... try giving just 1 tiny bit less.... maybe reduce the enzymes by 1/16 tsp of a tsp instead of giving 1 tsp per 1 cup.... and watch the poos. to make sure all is okay.
Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........

Thank you both for the feedback. I’ll make a slight adjustment once I start using this new batch and watch for any change and make further tweaks if needed.

I just wasn’t sure what the margin of error might be and how the dogs body might adapt with the differing levels.

with the powdered enzymes.... you can have a variable in strength of about 20,000 USP units with the Lipase enzymes..... sometimes without having too much concern with "many" EPI dogs.....

for example, the typical standard is 71,400 USP units of Lipase .but with many EPI dogs using 91,400 is just fine, as is using 51,400..... HOWEVER... that being said.... with some dogs.... 91,400 is simply too potent for them some EPI dogs so you need to slightly reduce the amount .... and on the other end of the spectrum, using 51,400 is sometimes too weak for some EPI dogs so you need to increase slightly.

This is a very typical problem of EPI management.... although we have recommended guidelines.... with these EPI dogs...we often find that the guidelines can be "tweaked" or in many cases, need to be tweaked...........hence why we strongly recommend keeping an EPI Log/Journal https://epi4dogs.com/epi-log/ :)

Davi, I always used 1 teaspoon per cup of kibble when I used Diane's enzymes, and it was perfect. The translation, the formulas, I know nothing. Just that the classic recipe is 1 teaspoon 6X to 1 cup of kibble, moisten, let sit for 20 minutes, serve. Sometimes a yummy topper like a tablespoon of tuna, some sardines, or cottage cheese is nice to get your pup's juices flowing.

Take Care--Pam
Tucker was a shepherd mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Diane's Enzymes 4 t/day, B12 1 capsule/day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/day. Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 4 c/day. 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma Nov. 2023. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

Now there's Nina. 5 year old GSD. TLI 1.0 B12 323. We are still tweaking her routine, and getting lots of help from the forum. She is klutzy and goofy, and we love her dearly, too.
