Confused

Post by Dan_L » 24 Feb 2024, 08:45

So when looking at places to order Tylan online once the vet gave a prescription I happened to stumble across a link to Tractor Supply (https://www.tractorsupplyrx.com/tylan-s ... 27011.html) that appears to not require a prescription. It says it’s for chickens, turkeys, swine, and honeybees only but in the reviews some say they give it to their dogs.

So can someone help me understand the difference between the vet prescribed version and this one so that I, or anyone else that sees the same thing, knows whether or not this is safe?

Hi Dan,
That is the correct Tylan. If you look on that link next to Tylan name it has a tiny RX next to it, so I assume your vet would fax them the script.

Tylan used to be over the counter and you could buy it on Amazon, TS, etc.

Good catch Jill. That’s what I get for browsing before I’ve had adequate levels of caffeine.

Hi DAn,

thanks for asking and glad Jill helped.... BUT..... i do want to clarify something... Tractor Supply used to carry both powder and liquid Tylan (all for chickens, swine, bees, etc)..... and like Jill said, we used to be able to buy the powder without a script... which was the correct Tylan for dogs.... but now you need a script.

HOWEVER..... i just want to clarify that Tractor Supply still carries the liquid (injectable) Tylan where i don't think a script is needed BUT this is the wrong Tylan for dogs..... just saying so that folks don't get confused and try to use the liquid/injectable.

Thank you both. When things seem easy, or just “off”, I prefer to just step back and ask those in the know. So by posing my confusion here I’m now more clear and I hope others will skim through this and exercise caution for any medications they hunt for.

We all know proper medical care can be expensive but two often cutting corners can be much worse.
