SLIPPERY ELM QUESTION---

The dosage for Nina is 3/4 teaspoon, but it says to give SE with breakfast and dinner.

Do I split 3/4 teaspoons between her two meals, or give 3/4 teaspoon with both meals?

Thanks!---Pam
Tucker was a shepherd mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Diane's Enzymes 4 t/day, B12 1 capsule/day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/day. Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 4 c/day. 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma Nov. 2023. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

Now there's Nina. 5 year old GSD. TLI 1.0 B12 323. We are still tweaking her routine, and getting lots of help from the forum. She is klutzy and goofy, and we love her dearly, too.

Wow! 3/4 teaspoon sounds like a lot. Chance started getting softer poop when I gave him 800mg (2 capsules of 400mg each).

I'd been giving Rylee 1 capsule twice daily.

Today I just got Gastro Elm Plus, so started that instead today. But dosing on that seems strange. Package recommends mixing 1 tablespoon of powder into 4 0z of water, bone broth or aloe Vera juice. Then half mL per pound of body weight twice daily.

Slippery elm/gastro elm (now), I give 2 hrs before lunch and dinner.
Chance was my 4 legged soul mate. My mobility assist service dog. Pure yellow Lab, 75 lbs. After struggling with weight all his life, finally dx with EPI. cTLI < 1, folate and B12 very low. Fed Raw. Maintained with Creon, Garden of Life probiotic and intermittent calcium bentonite clay. (Tylosin was a big nightmare for him)!

Rylee is Chance's successor; also pure Yellow/Fox red Lab. Started with symptoms at 8 weeks. At 6 months of age, also prescribed Creon due to suspected EPI (due to passing large amounts of undigested food). Currently suspected of blockages in pancreatic ducts. She is maintained VERY nicely on Creon and probiotics. Also raw fed.

if Nina is 80/+ lbs... then she get 3/4 of a tsp. BUt your are correct.... too much SE can give loose stools, but too little won't work... you kind of have to dins the sweet spot.

I just looked up the ingredients in Gastro Elm Plus: YIKES!!!! that is a lot of slippery elm.... AND when calculating the SLippery Elm add Marshmallow Root with it... so that is 3,500 mg in 1 tsp. this "might" be too much fiber... or not.... keep a good eye on the poos afterwards.
The Dandeloin and Milk Thistle are good ingredients.

All the ingredients are excellent... but the percentage of the ingredients may not be so great... or just fine. The only way you will know is to try it. Keep us posted.

Ingredient Breakdown
Each tablespoon is 4.5 grams (4500 mg):

Appalachian Wild Crafted Slippery Elm Bark Powder - 3000 mg
Marshmallow Root Powder - 500 mg
Dandelion Root Powder - 500 mg
Milk Thistle Seed Powder - 500 mg

do keep us posted on the results!

The GastroElm product is used extensively by dogs with pancreatitis in the groups I am in. Usually fiber amount is not much of a consideration there.

thanks Jill for letting us know it is a good product with the Pancreatitis group...... the ingredients are all very good... but the fiber composition might be way too high for some EPI dogs due to possible conflict with fiber and enzymes. I will be very interested to hear the results from Andrea trying it with Rylee.

I understand it is too high fiber for normal Epi. I also will be interested in how it works😀

hi Jill,

Hopefully Andrea will give us an update once she gives it to Rylee.

I had not managed to find the break-down of ingredients in the gastro elm. So thanks go that :)

I do give a little less than package recommended amount. I give it between meals. I actually have not noticed any difference in poop quality at all. Her poops are still very solid.

Package directions are kinda weird. They say 1 tbsp of powder to 4 oz water (or aloe Vera juice). Give half ml per lbs of body weight. To 50 lbs dog gets 25 ml. (I was concerned that was a bit much slippery elm, so I started lower).

I've seen it recommended a lot in EPI groups as well.

Just so we're clear, I am using Wonderlabs slippery elm powder, and I am sharing this way too soon. I know---

After about 5 days of giving Nina 3/4 teaspoons SE 2X day---Guys, her poop is so normal it's not funny. Not yet long-term results, but hey, it's Saturday morning, and Nina's poop is the thing I am MOST happy about, so that says something, right? I am officially a slippery elm convert. After weaning her off Tylan, and seeing her stop her bum licking, I think there's a chance she was sensitive to Tylan on the way out. Who knows? That's why I decided to try SE again, so it's a win either way.

I'll keep you posted.---P
