Help I think my dog has epi
Re: Help I think my dog has epi
The stomach gurgling can be from any number of factors. It's difficult to say for sure what caused it here.
It could be a sensitivity to something he's eaten, or been given. It could be acid reflux because the pancreas is still producing too many enzymes, or too much enzymesat the wrong times (ie, when there's no food). Or it could maybe be a semi normal thing, when the tummy is empty? So, have you noticed certain times it's happening?
With Chance it could happen when SID/SIBO was an issue. But for him it turned out to be really bad because of the Tylosin he was prescribed. He had a cast iron stomach, and could eat almost anything he wanted (as long as there was enzymes). Yet Tylosin was something that made him sooo much worse. He was on it many weeks before I finally realized it's possible that's the problem! Finally I started to realize that the belly noises only occurred after breakfast and dinner. No noises after lunch. It finally dawned on me that maybe I should try not giving it one night. Not only was there no tummy noises; he actually slept through the night, instead of having to RUN outside every single hour! For most dogs, Tylosin is a miracle drug. For Chance, it was a nightmare, and far worse than SIBO itself could ever be!
Hopefully you get the cPLI down to a more respectable level, and the poor little guy begins to feel more himself soon!

Chance was my 4 legged soul mate. My mobility assist service dog. Pure yellow Lab, 75 lbs. After struggling with weight all his life, finally dx with EPI. cTLI < 1, folate and B12 very low. Fed Raw. Maintained with Creon, Garden of Life probiotic and intermittent calcium bentonite clay. (Tylosin was a big nightmare for him)!
Rylee is Chance's successor; also pure Yellow/Fox red Lab. Started with symptoms at 8 weeks. At 6 months of age, also prescribed Creon due to suspected EPI (due to passing large amounts of undigested food). Currently suspected of blockages in pancreatic ducts. She is maintained VERY nicely on Creon and probiotics. Also raw fed.

So sweet!
A gurgly tummy, burping, flatulence and acid reflux are symptoms of SIBO. That is where the Tylan use came in as Mickey's poop was covered with a slimy casing. The Tylan I used was a powder.
With pancreatitis it is usually best to break the total daily food amount up into 3 or 4 meals to put less stress on the pancreas. The stew should work just keep an eye on the poop.

Re: Help I think my dog has epi
His test result shows today. His cpl from 216 now is 421. It’s a bit heartbreaking. Now the vet increases his Lypex dose from half a pill to 1 dose per morning meal and evening meal. The good news is ALP his gallbladder decreased to 234. His kidney crea 0,7 but his bun is still 46. Now my major issue is to keep his cpl and his bun lower. Do you guy have any advice? He still has no sign of vomiting or stomach ache. He still walk for 30-1 hour.
Re: Help I think my dog has epi
Oh that's so sad!
I'm sorry, I really don't know how to help get the inflammation down (ie: climbing PLI) down.
Maybe Jill will have some input

Hi Nat. I am no help on the elevated cPl as Mickeys was >1000 and remained so for at least 3 years until he passed at 15. I got the cTli down to normal but not the cPl.
Can you tell me all medications your pup is on? Some medications have a link to pancreatitis, such as Metronidazole(flagyl) antibiotic.
How were the poops on the 1/2 lypex per meal?
Does your pup spend all day at the vet and you fetch him at 5pm? Are they only feeding him twice a day?
The BUN may remain elevated due to dehydration.
A couple of things. You could see if a product called Thick-it is available on Amazon over there. You add it to water to make it easier to eat/drink. Maybe add a tad bone broth to it.
Also, see if you can get GastroElm. It is slippery elm with added milk thistle, dandelion root and
Mardhmallow root.

Re: Help I think my dog has epi
Hi Jill and chance and everyone
I have asked the vet about the medicine.
Unfortunately they gave him metronidazole!! They don’t have any alternative. Would this metronidazole be ok for the long run?His medicines are lypex, sustain prebiotic, ursolin for his gallbladder and samylin.
I bring my dog to vet at 9 am and pick him up at 5:30 pm. They feed him 2 times a day. The vet would blend food with water. I have a bit of doubt about this vet now. In Chiang Mai there is another vet but it’s very pricy and I am not sure whether another vet will use metronidazole. It’s a bit concerning that most of the vet don’t have variety of medicine in Chiang Mai.
During morning walk 21 October,
1 dose pill of lypex
1st one is firm darker color stool. Dark milk chocolate color. Easily pick up
2nd poop still in shape softer and appear to be cover in jellylike. Still can pick up not as firm as 1st poop and milk chocolate color.
3rd poop starting to get more loose but still in shape. while pick up it feel softer. It has milk chocolate color.
On 20 October morning walk,
1/2 pill lypex
1st His poop was in solid shape, milk chocolate color and can be pick up easily
His 2nd poop was still in shape but quite soft it’s became loose when I pick up (milk chocolate color).
His 3rd poop has dark chocolate color it’s softer like shape like Japanese soft cream ice cream. It’s very hard to pick up.
Sorry that I have to describe his stool with chocolate.
I read that samylin has milk thistle too. Vet said it help liver and pancrea.
Thank you for your help. Here’s a picture of my little man sleeping peacefully.

Re: Help I think my dog has epi
Well, you've about cured me of my chocolate cravings
Metronidazole isn't really the best antibiotic, as it does kill all bacteria. Often it's hard to get the good bacteria back after. But sadly, it's Often one that a lot of vets do prescribe, a lot. It usually does improve the quality of the stool while on it; but everything comes crashing down after. Trouble is there's been troubling symptoms with long term use. More vets are starting to turn to Tylosin now, instead of Metronidazole.
I like Jill's suggestion regarding the Gastro Elm. But I am not sure how affordable it would be to ship to the Philippines. But it's pretty good stuff, if it is available there. It's initially intended for dogs with Pancreatitis. But I did use it for my dog as well for a couple of months, after the EPI diagnosis.

Re: Help I think my dog has epi
I have found his treatment from the previous vet in Bangkok.
This vet is very pricy one but it seems to work for him.
Amoxy-clav 62.5
Omeprazile 20
Sucralfate 3
Lypex 1 capsule
Acetar 100-150 ml
Is this medicine ok? Which one is antibiotic?

Re: Help I think my dog has epi
Hi Nat. I just read back through your postings from the beginning.
Is the vet using antibiotics due to an ongoing infection or to get rid of SID/SIBO? Seems he has been on an antibiotic awhile now. Good to move to Amox if needed just beware with all antibiotics there is chance of stomach ache and nausea.
Keep on the pre and probiotic.
Yes the Tylan should be available online. You might or might not need a prescription.

Like you say optimal would be at least 3 smaller meals a day and a 4th would help. Splitting the food for 1 day into 4 little meals.
