Hannah's stool not looking so great

Post by Bonnie » 05 Apr 2019, 20:21

Hello!
I''ve been a member for awhile now and have gotten through all the beginnings with all your help, but Hannah's stool has not been looking so great recently. In December we switched her to 8X enzyme as 6X was unavailable. We switched her about a year ago from B12 injections to Wonderlabs B12 as she freaked out with the injections half the time when I gave them. She is a complicated young lady medically, pretty stable at this time with all her issues, but I'm wondering what could be her problem with the stool right now. She is 81 lbs., I empty 2 capsules of the B12 in the AM on her food. She eats 1 1/2 cups of Holistic Select Lamb and Rice twice a day and we have been putting 1 1/2 tsp (level measurements always) on her food with 1/3 cup tepid water to incubate. Medications have been the same for awhile now. What could be going awry? Any ideas? Thanks!
Hannah - DOB: 8/15/12 ~ our sweet shelter rescue- November 2012 Current Weight: 81 lbs.

Enzyme Diane & Medications: Cyclosporine, Fluconazole, Metronidazole, Rimadyl, Gabapentin, Pet Factor B12 capsule, MovoFlex

Hi, could it be she is not so good with the rice in the food? Just wondering if it is inviting SID?

So, she’s been on the food since she was 12 weeks old without problems. The 8x enzyme May be the problem? I did try to reduce the amount but not sure how long to wait to see if it helps?

Hi and sorry you're having troubles now.....
It could be the enzyme change, some pups are sensitive to any changes at all. You say you are giving 1 1/2 tsp of the 8x, that may be a little too much. The ratio for 6x is 1 tsp per cup of food, but the ratio for 8x is 3/4 tsp per cup of food.
I would start with that change and give it 3-5 days to see what happens. Too much enzyme can cause runny poops just like too little.
Most EPI dogs do not do well with rice, but each one is different, so I would try to tweak the enzymes before I changed the food since she has been eating it successfully for so long.
Let us know how things go

Riley is a 10 year old Labradoodle. She was diagnosed with EPI in 2014.
She currently eats Taste of the Wild, I cup in the morning, 2 cups in the evening, each meal with 1 Wonderlabs B12 sprinkled over her dinner. Enzymes are EnzymeDiane, 1 tsp per cup of food, mixed in home made bone broth. No other supplements or meds at this time.
Riley currently weighs about 44 pounds, which is pretty heavy for her.

Has her food changed? WellPet is a good one for tweaking recipes and not announcing it. I work for a pet supply store and I see it a lot. At one point they changed their cooking process and it changed the texture of the wet food and put a lot of cats right off the stuff. My cats were eating Eagle wet food years ago and doing really well on it until they started messing around. They've done this with their dry food over the years as well. It might be a good idea to call the company and ask if they've made any recent changes.
Montgomery went through a bout of something a couple weeks ago and is just fine now. I still have no idea what set him off. Animals...
Montgomery was born 21 March 2012. He is a DSH orange tabby and white. Montgomery eats RCFHN Spayed/Neutered Kitten dry food and Royal Canin Ultra Light wet food. He is a catnip junkie who loves paper bags and his stuffed mouse, Ignatz. His Pank-Aid is put into capsules each day as he gets mouth ulcers if it is mixed into his food. He gets two size zero capsules with each meal and eats six times each day. He gets .5ml Ovol twice a day for his gas. He is an enormous 3.08kg and strong enough to give his veterinarian a hard time. He is smart as a whip, has the loudest purr in the universe, and is so, so loved.

Thanks Everyone!!! Per your suggestions, I'll reduce the enzyme and wait the 5 to 7 days. I'll call the food company to see if they made any changes. I'll post again how things are going!

Just wanted to pop in and say hi! Glad you are trying to reduce the enzymes first. If she has always been on the rice food and has done well on it then I would change that last. Also, as dogs age they need a pinch more of enzymes sometimes and it could be that that happened at the same time as the enzyme change. Keep us posted on how things go.

Thanks Madelon. I decreased the 8x a tad and will wait to see how this affects her stool. She’s a bit complicated because of all the meds she is on for the issues she has. I will be using up the 8x and going back to the 6x when it’s available. Always great to have this group for support. I hadn’t been on line for quite awhile as we were busy trying to get help for her anal fissures and she was stable from an EPI standpoint. Then seeing the Dermatologist specialist for the fissures it opened up even more issues that she had ugh....

Oh I can relate! After Doc was diagnosed he had so many skin issues/infections, fistulas, pyoderma - he was a HOT MESS!! I got his food sensitivities and allergies under control and he did GREAT until the dog food company changed the ingredients in his food.

I just ordered a kilogram of the 6x so it's available now.
